Can ChatGPT send me a push notification when it finishes?

Yes, through a custom MCP connector. You add Pushary in ChatGPT under Settings, Connectors, which needs Developer mode on a Plus plan or higher, and paste one link. ChatGPT can then call send_notification when a task finishes and ask_user when it needs a decision, and you answer from your lock screen. Nothing physically blocks ChatGPT, because it exposes no hooks, so the wording of your custom instructions is the real control.

How do I get notified when ChatGPT finishes a task?

Add Pushary as a custom connector in ChatGPT under Settings, Connectors, then paste the Pushary instructions block into Settings, Personalization, Custom instructions. ChatGPT then sends you a push notification when a long task completes, and can ask you questions you answer from your phone.

ChatGPT already notifies me. Why would I add this?

ChatGPT's own notifications tell you a scheduled task or a reply finished. They are one-way. Pushary covers the part that is missing: ChatGPT can ask you a question mid-task and you answer it from your lock screen, and the chat carries on with your answer. It also gives you one inbox for every agent you run, not just ChatGPT, so Claude Code, Codex and Cursor land in the same place, and it keeps an audit trail of every question and answer. If all you want is a sound when a reply finishes, a browser extension is the cheaper answer and we would rather tell you that.

Which ChatGPT plans support custom connectors?

Custom connectors need Developer mode, which is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Free ChatGPT cannot add custom connectors. On a work account, an admin may need to enable Developer mode for the workspace first.

Does Pushary block ChatGPT until I approve?

No. ChatGPT exposes no hooks, so this is a cooperative integration: ChatGPT decides when to ask, guided by your custom instructions. Enforced approvals that physically block a command until you say yes are available for Codex, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Cursor, and Hermes.

Is this the same as connecting Codex?

No, and Codex is the stronger integration. Codex supports native hooks, so Pushary can physically block a shell command or a patch until you approve it from your phone. ChatGPT itself can only notify you and ask you questions. Many people connect both.

Why does ChatGPT ask me to confirm every time it notifies me?

ChatGPT requires manual confirmation before running any write action from a custom connector, and sending a notification counts as a write. That prompt comes from OpenAI's safety model, not from Pushary, and it cannot be disabled from our side.

Do I need to install anything, or use a terminal?

No. You copy one link from your Pushary dashboard and paste it into ChatGPT under Settings, Connectors. There is nothing to download, no command to run, and no config file to edit. The whole setup is three steps and takes about two minutes.

Does this work in the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps?

Connectors are attached to your ChatGPT account, so once you add Pushary on the web it is available in the ChatGPT desktop app too. You still turn it on per conversation from the tools menu. The notifications themselves arrive on your phone through the Pushary app or your browser, so you do not need ChatGPT open to receive them.
